Homer Hailey
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Homer Hailey (1903 – 2000) was a preacher in the churches of Christ in the 20th century, as well as a teacher at Abilene Christian University and Florida College and the author of at least 15 religious books. He was well-known for his general biblical knowledge and especially his knowledge of the Old Testament. Homer Hailey and the churches of Christ are the topics of the book The Churches of Christ in the 20th Century : Homer Hailey's Personal Journey of Faith by David Edwin Harrell, Jr. Most of his books are still in print. Audio recordings of his sermons and classes are available through TruthOnDisc.Net
Homer Hailey was born outside Marshall, Texas, on August 12, 1903, the oldest child of Robert Thomas Hailey and Mamie Collins Hailey. His brothers and sisters were Rob, Ruth, Jack, Roy, and Mary Ida. He married Lois Estelle Manly (1907-1954) on December 20, 1930, in Abilene, Texas. They had five children: Roma Luceil, Mary Lois, Homer Rob, Charles Dennis, and Carol Ann. He also was married to Widna Neeley Kirby (1917-1997) from October 4, 1955 until her death. Homer Hailey died in Tucson, Arizona, on November 9, 2000, at the age of 97.
In 2000, David Edwin Harrell, Jr., an emeritus professor of religion of Auburn University, published "The Churches of Christ in the Twentieth Century: Homer Hailey’s Personal Journey of Faith" (University of Alabama Press, 2000). In this scholarly study, Harrell alternates chapters between an historical look at an issue or conflict within the first 100 years of the Churches of Christ and the way in which Homer Hailey responded to that issue or conflict. This plain-spoken man who had memorized every verse in the Bible became Harrell's touchstone for the Churches of Christ's first century.
