Home Garden is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kings County, California, United States. The community is about 1.5 mi (2.4 km} southeast of the city of Hanford. The population was 1,702 at the 2000 United States Census.

Home Garden is located at 36°18′12″N, 119°38′5″W (36.303291, -119.634710)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all of it land.

[edit] Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,702 people, 427 households, and 368 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,035.0 people per square mile (1,173.5/km²). There were 437 housing units at an average density of 779.3/sq mi (301.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 33.49% White, 12.93% Black or African American, 2.41% Native American, 7.29% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 37.07% from other races, and 6.64% from two or more races. 55.17% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 427 households out of which 48.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 21.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 13.8% were non-families. 10.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.95 and the average family size was 4.10.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 37.9% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 112.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 112.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $25,450, and the median income for a family was $24,214. Males had a median income of $26,071 versus $14,338 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,357. It is noteworthy that about 33.5% of families and 41.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 53.5% of those under age 18 and 24.4% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature, Home Garden is located in the 16th Senate District, represented by Democrat Dean Florez, and in the 30th Assembly District, represented by Democrat Nicole Parra. Federally, Home Garden is located in California's 20th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of D +5[3] and is represented by Democrat Jim Costa.
