Homas

Homas are small scale pujas in which different offerings are put into fire under the supervision of a Vedic Purohit chanting special mantras. They are performed according to the occasion. For example for curing of diseases and problems or for seeking the blessings of god, especially before starting new endeavours. Homas can be offered to different gods and according they have different names such as Sudharshana Homam (for seeking the blessing of Vishnu), Ganapathi Homam (for seeking blessing of Ganesha). One popular homam is the Navagraha Homam in which offerings are made to he Nine Planets of Hindu Astrology also known as Navagraha (or Nine houses). This is carried out when people believe that they are being affected by bad luck.
