[edit] History
Holston Middle School originated as a one-room school in 1885 and it was known as Holston Institute. The name institute was considered an honor because it designated a school of higher learning. Students from Gate City, Big Stone Gap, Mendota, and other areas of Virginia and Kentucky attended and was also a boarding facility for those who needed to be boarded.
Building programs in 1911, 1915, 1931 and 1954 were necessary to accommodate the growing community. The school became known as Holston High and Elementary school until 1968 when Central High School was completed. The school then became known as Holston Elementary and Junior High School.
In 1979, Sullivan County was active in renovating and building new schools. Much of the Holston building was condemned as a fire hazard and therefore it was decided to move to a new location. The existing duplex building housing both the middle school and the elementary school was completed in January 1980. It is handicapped accessible, with the middle school occupying one wing and the elementary school the other. Middle School student population averages around 450 students in grades 6th through 8th.
