[edit] Yersiniosis
In 1976, yersiniosis, a bacterial disease, struck the Holland Patent schools. It was initially diagnosed as appendicitis, and appendices were removed unnecessarily from many young children. The curious nature of the outbreak led to an unprecedented degree of media coverage, including a lengthy article in the New York Times, which called Holland Patent's water system "primitive." It turned out that the problem lay not with the water, but with the chocolate milk served in the school's cafeterias.
