Hoist is the seventh studio album by the jam band Phish. The album was the best selling Phish album at the time of its release. The album includes cameos from Alison Krauss, Béla Fleck, and many other musicians as well as actor Jonathan Frakes on trombone. It contained a stripped-down, simple songwriting approach with pop-friendly hooks, a brand new formula for Phish. The song "Demand" contains an instrumental section from a 1993 live performance of the song "Split Open and Melt", followed by the first verse and refrain of the Hebrew song Yerushalayim shel Zahav.
The album was certified gold by the RIAA August 19, 1996.
There was an MTV video for "Down With Disease," directed by bassist Mike Gordon.
The band came up with a few ideas for the title of the album before finally settling on "Hoist"; one of the alternate suggestions was "Hung Like a Horse". The boys decided it was a bit vulgar, but decided to keep the visual joke intact, hence the memorable photo of the dangling equus.
