Hoa Kỳ
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hoa Kỳ is the official name of the United States of America in the Vietnamese language. The term originated from the Chinese Huaqi (花旗), which means "fancy flag", i.e. the flag of the United States. The Chinese used to call the United States Huaqiguo (花旗國; literally "fancy flag nation"). In modern Chinese, the United States is referred to as Meiguo (美国; literally "beautiful nation"). Its Vietnamese cognate, Mỹ, is also widely used, but not officially.
Even outside of Vietnam the U.S. is still referred to by Hoa Kỳ or Huaqi in many expressions. For example, Citibank is called "Huaqi Bank" in Chinese. In Japanese, American Ginseng is also called Kaki Jin, which Kaki is written with the same Chinese characters as Huaqi.
