AWM Caption: Williamstown, Victoria. Between 1870 and 1879. Port broadside view of the wooden steam battleship HMVS Nelson. In the 1860s the British Admiralty offered the ship on permanent loan to the Victorian Government with the proviso it was to be used only for training. The ship had been built as a three decker, reduced in Britain to a two decker and finally reduced in Victoria to a single decker. In the 1870s it was converted back to a fighting ship and eventually paid off in 1891 and sold at auction on 1898-04-28. (Naval Historical Collection)
