Some background on the term "third rate" would be good (in the US, "third rate" is a euphemism for "cheap junk" among other things). - Hephaestos

- I disagree. You have to assume some prior knowledge in your readers, as otherwise everything is written at kindergarten level. In this case, "first-rate," "second-rate," etc., are standard technical terms for characterizing ships of the era. PKKloeppel (talk) 13:32, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
