Didn't they FAIL to hit the U-Boat? Their glorious charge ended due to misfortune?
The charge at the end was to ram a German 'Hipper Class' cruiser (not a U-Boat), whom they'd encountered earlier. Their sinking before reaching it was caused by an explosion that may have been a torpedo, fired from an unseen U-Boat.
