Talk:HMS Perseus (N36)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Titling
In Royal Navy usage ships titles and names are not prefixed with 'The' as in 'The HMS Perseus', but use the form 'HMS Perseus'. The reason for this is apparent if the words are spelled out in their long-form, eg.
- 'The Her Majesty's Ship Perseus', clearly makes no grammatical sense, so this form is not used. Instead, with 'The' omitted we get
- 'Her Majesty's Ship Perseus'. Which makes perfect sense, grammatically.
- This format may not always be applicable to vessels of other navies, eg 'the USS Enterprise'. Brian.Burnell 16:49, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
