Notes per newspapers of the day:
- 4 January 1856: All gunboats from 1 Jan 1856 are to be independent commands and commissioned as such, not as tenders to other ships, as last year ; each will have a crew of 36 men and officers.
- 12 March 1856: The gunboats Sepoy and Erne, built by Messrs. T. and W. Smith, of St. Peter's, Newcastle, left the Tyne on Monday afternoon, in tow of the Cock-o'-the-North, for Woolwich.
- 23 April 1856: Present at Fleet Review, Spithead ; White Squadron ; Commander Knot
- 4 March 1863: HM gunboats Bullfrog, Carnation, Sepoy, and Spanker, from the 1st Div of Steam Reserve at Sheerness, will proceed to Gravesend on Thursday to take on board the RN Volunteers of the London division, who will assist in firing a Royal salute on the arrival of the Princess Alexandra. After the landing the gunboats will land the Volunteers and the gunboats will return to Sheerness.
