HMS Discovery

HMS Discovery was the name of a number of vessels in the Royal Navy.

• HMS Discovery, launched 1774, was a 230 ton former collier which served as the consort to HMS Resolution on Captain James Cook's third voyage of exploration from 1776 to 1780, commanded by Charles Clerke. George Vancouver was a junior officer on this vessel. The United States Space Shuttle Discovery was named after HMS Discovery.

• HMS Discovery, launched 1789, was a 337 ton sloop of war commanded by Captain George Vancouver on his voyage of exploration from 1791 to 1794. This was the sixth vessel to be named HMS Discovery and the first recorded sighting of Mount St. Helens by Europeans was by George Vancouver on May 19, 1792, while they were surveying the northern Pacific Ocean. This ship was converted to a bomb vessel in 1799 and took part in the Battle of Copenhagen (1801).

• HMS Discovery, launched 1879, was a 1247-ton storeship commanded by Captain George Nares during the British Arctic Expedition, a voyage of exploration in the Eastern Arctic in 1875 to 1876.

• HMS Discovery, launched 1901, was a purpose-built exploration vessel commanded by Captain Robert Falcon Scott during the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901. She was redesignated RRS (Royal Research Ship) Discovery in 1923.
