The first HMS Defender was a 12-gun Gunboat built in 1797 at Limehouse and disposed of in 1802. She was fitted with a sliding keel and armed with ten 18-pounder carronades and two long 24-pounders. In 1799 her captain was Lt S P Leavy RN, and she was based in Portsmouth.
