HMS Biter (D97) was an escort carrier of the Royal Navy. She was laid down in 1939, under Maritime Commission contract (Hull Sun-60), by the Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Chester, Pennsylvania, launched on 18 December 1940, and transferred from the United States Navy to the Royal Navy in 1940.
She carried out some aircraft ferry operations in the Mediterranean then returned to the United Kingdom to start the real task.
In March 1943, she embarked the Fairey Swordfish of 811 Naval Air Squadron of the Fleet Air Arm and carried out operations escorting convoys.
In January 1945, HMS Biter was retransferred to the French Navy as Dixmude (the French name of the Flemish city of Diksmuide). She subsequently saw action in Indo-China in 1946-48. She was returned to the US Navy in 1966 for disposal.
