His Majesty's Indian Ship, HMIS Talwar was the signal training ship of the Royal Indian Navy. A hartal by the ratings of the ship on 18th February, 1946, snowballed into a mutiny by the navy personnel of the Royal Indian Navy. The mutiny spilled over to other ships and even on the streets of Mumbai. The Union Jack was lowered from many ships of the Royal Indian Navy and flags of the flags of the Congress party and the Muslim League were hoisted. Within four days of the beginning of the mutiny, large scale dissatisfaction among the people of Mumbai was noticed resulting into arson and lotting of the properties of the colonial masters of India though the general public was also affected.
