AWM Caption: C.1954. AERIAL STARBOARD SIDE VIEW OF THE FRIGATE HMAS SHOALHAVEN (F535). SHE HAS A HEDGEHOG ANTI SUBMARINE MORTAR ON HER FORECASTLE AND TWIN 4 INCH MARK XVI GUNS IN MARK XIX MOUNTINGS FORWARD AND AFT. THREE 40 MM BOFORS AA GUNS ARE MOUNTED AFT. THE TWIN 20 MM OERLIKON GUNS FORMERLY FITTED IN THE BRIDGE WINGS HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY TWO MORE BOFORS GUNS. THE 4 INCH GUNS ARE CONTROLLED BY THE HIGH ANGLE DIRECTOR ON THE BRIDGE WHICH IS EQUIPPED WITH TYPE 285 FIRE CONTROL RADAR. HER ORIGINAL POLE MAST, WITH SC-1 RADAR AT THE MASTHEAD, HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A LATTICE MAST WITH A TYPE 293 RADAR AT ITS HEAD. THE TYPE 276 RADAR HAS BEEN RETAINED. THE FIGURE 1 ON HER FUNNEL INDICATES THAT SHE IS A MEMBER OF THE 1ST FRIGATE SQUADRON. (NAVAL HISTORICAL COLLECTION)
