AWM Caption: BATHURST CLASS MINESWEEPER CORVETTE HMAS CAIRNS. CAIRNS WAS BUILT BY WALKERS LTD OF MARYBOROUGH, QUEENSLAND, AND LAUNCHED ON 1941-10-07. DURING WORLD WAR 2 SHE SAW SERVICE IN MOST THEATRES OF WAR EVENTUALLY BEING PAID OFF IN 1945-12. ON 1946-01-17 CAIRNS WAS SOLD TO THE ROYAL NETHERLANDS NAVY AND RENAMED AMBON AND THEN ON 1950-04-06 TRANSFERRED TO THE INDONESIAN NAVY AND RENAMED BANTENG.
