AWM Caption: SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. HMAS AUSTRALIA AFTER HER RETURN FROM THE ALLIED INVASION OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS. THE "AUSTRALIA" SUFFERED DAMAGE AND LOSSES AT THE LANDING AT LEYTE ISLAND IN 1944-10, AND AT LINGAYEN GULF, LUZON, IN 1945-01. IN THE LATTER ACTION WHILE FULFILLING HER BOMBARDMENT & SUPPORT OBLIGATIONS, SHE SUSTAINED FOUR DIRECT HITS BY ENEMY AIRCRAFT & ONE NEAR MISS, AGAIN SUFFERING SEVERE DAMAGE & HEAVY CASUALTIES. (IN THIS PHOTOGRAPH PORTION OF HER FORWARD FUNNEL IS MISSING AS A RESULT OF A JAPANESE KAMIKAZE (SUICIDE PLANE) CRASHING ABOARD DURING THIS ACTION.)
