The first HMAS Launceston (J179/B246/A120) was a Bathurst class corvette laid down by Evans Deakin & Co at Brisbane, Queensland on 23 December 1940, launched on 30 June 1941 by Mrs. W. Forgan-Smith, wife of the premier of Queensland, and commissioned on 9 April 1942.[1]

From September 1942 until September 1944, Launceston was assigned to the British Eastern Fleet.

HMAS Launceston paid off on 23 March 1946, and was briefly commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Launceston, prior to transfer into the Turkish Navy in late 1946.[1] Initially named Ayancik, and later renamed Hamit Naci, the ship was withdrawn from service in 1965.[1]
