The third HMAS Hobart is planned to be the first of three ships to be built for the Royal Australian Navy under the Sea 4000 Project. The ship will be classed primarily in the air defence mission, but will be a true multi-role vessel, being fitted with the Aegis combat system. Its onboard facilities will be such to allow it to act as a task group flagship, and it will have space to accommodate combat troops and special forces as needed. In June 2007, it was announced that the Spanish F100 frigate would form the basis of the design. Hobart will be built by the Australian Submarine Corporation at Osborne, South Australia, and is due to enter service in approximately 2013.
