In 1974, HMAS Cairns was commissioned as the parent establishment for patrol vessels and hydrographic ships based at Cairns.
Cairns is currently responsible for all Australian naval activity from Rockhampton to Thursday Island and serves as the home base for four of the navy's 14 Armidale class patrol boats . The base also berths the RAN's entire hydrographic fleet, consisting ]</ref>. HMAS Cairns will be home port for 4 of the 14 new when they replace the Fremantle class patrol boats.[1]
