Hjartdal is a municipality in the county of Telemark, Norway.

[edit] The name

The Norse form of the name was Hjartdalr. The first element is probably a rivername *Hjarta (now Hjartdøla), the last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'. The rivername is derived from hjortr m 'red deer'.

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1989). It shows a red deer. (See above under the information of the name.)
