According to the international AIDS charity AVERT, Russia has the largest HIV epidemic in Europe, and also accounts for approximately two-thirds of the cases in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. According to research by UNAIDS (The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS) in a report published in 2006 on the global AIDS epidemic there were an estimated 940,000 people living with HIV at the end of 2005 in Russia - up from 760,000 in 2003 [1][2].
