Template talk:History of Sweden
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hi, there has been some discussion at Wikipedia talk:Article series to codify the format for Wikipedia:Article series boxes (aka a seriesbox). The format that many articles used before the MediaWiki message came into existence is close to the format you have, but is a little less like a table of contents (to distinguish them from TOCs) and have a slightly smaller footprint.

For example:
I think it would be a good idea to standardize this, so please join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Article series. Thanks. --Lexor|Talk 10:03, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)
An image has appeared at the top of the table. I don't feel that it is inappropriate, though keeping it in some sense mean failing the proposed format at Wikipedia talk:Article series. For the time beeing I decided to retain the image, but adapting the table in general along the lines of the proposal. -- Mic 11:43, Feb 22, 2004 (UTC)
- I think that article series for different subjects can't all be the same. This is an article series about the history of Sweden, and thus it is natural to include the Swedish coat of arms at the top of the table. It also gice the table a nicer look. Den fjättrade ankan 01:31, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)

- I think having an image in some seriesboxes is fine. Tweaks on the basic format are fine, so long as they are in addition to the baseline format (the basic format that shouldn't be changed is: font, font size, border width and basic layout) and don't replace them. So for me, images like this are fine, any discussion will come up on Wikipedia talk:Article series. --Lexor|Talk 04:21, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)
[edit] "Frihetstiden" ["the Age of Liberty"]
I've long been disturbed by both this template and the name of the article that covers Sweden's 18th ct experiment with Parliamentarism. Up until now, this template has listed as follows:
- Swedish Empire
- Great Northern War
- Absolute Monarchy
- Union with Norway
There are several disturbing things here:
- Sweden in fact had a more typical Absolutism in the 17th century, dismantled 1718-22, than the Gustavian Absolutism that was introduced in 1772. The template gives until now the opposite impression.
- Frihetstiden is a much used concept for an important epoche 1721/22-72 that somehow has been made invisible.
- The Great Northern War was fought by the Swedish Empire, but the link from this template has been to the Frihetstiden-article.
I now change the template to:
- Swedish Empire
- "Age of Liberty"
- Gustav's Absolutism
- Union with Norway
This is not ideal, but for matter of brevity "Gustav's Absolutism" is to be preferred instead of better alternatives.
Maybe the phrase "Age of Liberty" has disturbingly much of propagandist ring to it, but it's fittingly short and it corresponds with the terminology used by Swedish (and Finnish?) history books.
[edit] Add an image?
History of Sweden |

The current layout of this template is a bit colorless. What about adding a picture to it? I suggest that we take a historical map, but we could use something else as well. For instance, a picture of Gustav Vasa is used on the swedish history stub. If nobody disagrees, I will add the image to this template.
