[edit] Shortcomings of HPS streetlights
Can someone add some decent information on this topic? What's currently in the article doesn't make sense - what are "cycling" lights? GoodSirJava 01:19, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
- The information here also is inconsistent with that at sodium vapor lamp—specifically, this article says that high-pressure lamplight is monochromatic orange and is used widely for streetlights, whereas that article says these characteristics apply to low pressure lamps. Something's wrong here.... --TreyHarris 20:52, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
"Cycling" is a term used when the light flickers, attempts to illuminate, stops, cools down, then tries again, and again.
[edit] what da hell?
why is this article called history of street lighting in United States but it says first time street lighting was used was in london or something in the first sentence? is dis article about london or u.s.? --218.101.69.142 00:19, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes it was invented in London, this is just for historical information. You can't have an article about a subject in a particular area that does not mention where it originated. -Uagehry456talk 00:31, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Inconsistency
Some other Wikipedia web site indicates that Attalla, Alabama is the first US town to have electric street lighting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_light Which one is it? New York or Attalla?
- [1] It is Attalla apparently. Please tag your messages with 4 tildes, thanks. Binarypower 16:48, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- According to this, the first city in the world to be lit by electric streetlamps was Cleveland, Ohio, in 1879. Uncle G 09:48, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
- You are correct. Cleveland was. Binarypower 03:08, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Unsourced statements in this article
Numerous - "About 98% of the energy used by incandescent lighting is wasted in heat." "Many towns/cities still have their MV streetlights in operation, though they're slowly being replaced by HPS lamps. Debates still rage whether this is truly a wise move given the maintenance cost and quality issues of HPS lighting." "Many prefer the blue-white light of the MV lamp to the orange-yellow light of the HPS lamp." "There has also been a noted issue with the lamps "exploding/shattering" during a failure."
I'm sure there are others. I think these kind of assertions should be backed up by a source.
[edit] Too many links
I just started to clean up a little, but if anyone has the time, some of these links can be taken out. Every instance of a given word doesn't need to be linked. 18.173.1.42 18:36, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Are we sure about anytown
So on Jeopardy Tournament of Champions they said that Wabash,Indiana was the first with street lights what's the real truth--Avocado42o 06:16, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
