History of beauty pageants in Canada

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Canada presently has three major beauty pageants: Miss Universe Canada, Miss World Canada, and Miss Earth Canada. Smaller events such as Miss Canada International, and Miss International Canada are also run. Previously Canada had chosen its international representatives through various local competitions (such as ones sponsored by Silknet Ltd. in the 1950s), until the Miss Dominion of Canada Contest was created in 1959.[1].

Miss Universe Canada was created in 2003, with the first Miss Universe Canada representative being Leanne Marie Cecile[3]. Leanne was a finalist in the Miss Universe 2003 finals in Panama City, Panama. Canada has won the Miss Universe title two times; the first was Karen Baldwin from London, Ontario, in 1982, and the second was Natalie Glebova from Toronto, Ontario, in 2005[4]. Prior to the abolishment of the Miss Canada pageant in 1992, the winners of that contest (between 1979-1992) also competed in Miss Universe; in 1978, that event's first runner-up participated.

[edit] Miss Canada International Trivia

  • 1996: Danielle House was dethroned after being found guilty of assault. Danielle was not replaced as her dethroning was so close to the end of her reign. Following her dethroning Danielle appeared nude in PlayBoy Magazine.
  • 2003: Lynsey Bennett was dethroned and replaced with 1st Runner-up, Lorenza Sammarelli from Vancouver, British Columbia. Bennett was dethroned on the grounds that she did not uphold her duties as a Miss Canada International representative; Bennett disputed these claims in media reports across Canada.

[edit] Miss International Canada

There is not a lot of information know about the election of Canadian representatives for past Miss International competitions, though recently more documentation has been noted. Winners or runners-up competed from 1960-1979; in 2002-2006, the Miss International Canada Contest took place to choose Canada's representative for this event. As of 2007, the Miss Universe Canada organization sends the Canadian contestant to Miss International.
