History of Simon Fraser University

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon Fraser University (SFU) was created in March 1963 following a provincial government report recommending a new university be opened in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Construction began in spring 1964 and was completed for the fall 1965 semester. The largely undeveloped Burnaby Mountain in Burnaby was chosen as a the campus site. A firm lead by Arthur Erickson designed the campus. SFU opened campuses in downtown Vancouver in 1980 and in Surrey in 2002, moving to Central City in 2006.[1]

The student newspaper The Peak was established in 1965 and has been available online since 1994. The university suffered a student strike of the cafeteria in 1967.[2]
