Historical Museum of Southern Florida

The Historical Museum of Southern Florida (HMSF) is a historical museum located in Miami, Florida, USA, which gives information about the history of South Florida and the Caribbean. The museum is one of the largest in the United States of America. HMSF is accredited by the American Association of Museums, as it has been since 1979.[1]

HMSF occupies a 40,000 square foot building in downtown Miami and has exhibition space on two floors. The top floor houses "Tropical Dreams," the permanent exhibition that covers 12,000 years of history. The entry level contains two galleries that rotate temporary exhibitions, as well as The Indies Company, HMSF's gift shop. Also there is the Research Center, which contains materials useful to museum professionals and scholars. The bottom floor contains classrooms that are used for educational programming and lectures, offices, and part of the museum's collection. In total, the museum's collection includes over 12,000 objects. HMSF is the official repository for all archaeological material recovered in Miami-Dade County.[2]
