[edit] Personality

Hisoka is erratic, volatile, and enjoys the act of killing targeted victims. He believes himself to be the one of the best fighters in the world, and always seeks to challenge anybody who appears to be equally powerful as him. He had previously set his sights on Kuroro, the leader of the Genei Ryodan, finding him to be a worthy opponent which he would want to kill with relish. This interest however he lost when Kuroro was deprived his use of nen. Hisoka was member number four in the Genei Ryodan, though he only pretended to join in order to get closer to Kuroro. He still hopes to fight Kuroro after having a nen eraser restore Kuroro's nen. He also developed an interest in Gon and Killua, and expects them to develop into worthy opponents.

[edit] Talents

Notorious for his cruel and deceitful fighting ability, Hisoka has proven to be deadly. His deviousness and volatility has made many opponents difficult to anticipate his next move, and this has led to him winning many battles. Using Shu powered poker cards as his primary weapon, he throws them with ease and deadly accuracy.

[edit] Nen Abilities

Hisoka's nen abilities have served him well on numerous occasions, and especially compliment his devious nature. While fighting with Kastro, he once fooled everyone by controlling his chopped arms with nen. Hisoka uses two versatile Hatsus, both in and out of combat:

  • Deceitful Texture - "Flimsy Lies" (ドッキリテクスチャ - "薄っぺらな嘘"):[4]

With this ability, Hisoka can apply his nen to any thin surface, like paper or cloth, and change its appearance. The effect can be compared to a high quality photocopy. If any physical contact is made with it, it is obviously a fake, but the appearance can easily be used to fool anyone. Hisoka named this ability after a famous brand of candy known to contain a surprise.[4]

During the Celestial Tower arc, it is revealed that the Spider tattoo on Hisoka's back is a fake he made out of cloth. Hisoka once changed the words on the prediction written for him by the Lovely Ghost Writer ability (Kuroro having stolen the ability from Neon by this point). This was in order to fool the Genei Ryodan into thinking that he had been forced to betray the Genei Ryodan's abilities by Kurapika's Judgement Chain. He did a similar thing on Greed Island to his Book, in order to fool Gon and Killua into thinking that he had not met any Genei Ryodan there.

  • Bungee Gum - "Elastic Love" (バンジーガム - 伸縮自在の愛):[4]

Hisoka alters his nen's consistency into an incredibly sticky substance, somewhat akin to bubble gum, albeit much stronger, which can be used pull back opponents within punching range for a flurry of rebound pummels. Bungee Gum can both stretch and contract, depending on what Hisoka desires. It can be attached either by pointing at the target or by physical contact. When not attached to Hisoka's body, Bungee Gum will not stretch more than 10 meters.[3] Hisoka named this ability after a brand of chewing gum he liked as a child.[4]

Hisoka's Bungee Gum cannot be seen unless his opponent uses Gyo. However, even if an opponent uses Gyo, it is still almost impossible to avoid, as Hisoka can simply attach Bungee Gum while hitting his opponent.

[edit] Relationships

Although Hisoka is an enigma, there are marked attitudes towards the characters he meets.

  • Gon and Killua: Hisoka refers to the two as "unripe fruits" and wonders why "unripe fruits look so delicious." Hisoka lives to fight and for the thrill of killing and feels that the two have great potential to become amazing fighters--and when they have become strong enough to offer a truly satisfying duel, Hisoka plans to kill them. However, in order to allow them to reach this stage, Hisoka refuses to allow them to die, demanding that the only way they will die is by his hand. Hisoka has even teamed up with the pair against Razor.
  • Kurapika and Leorio: During the fourth stage of the Hunter Exam, on Zebile Island, Hisoka also refers to the two as "unripe fruits", however, his interest in them is minimal compared to his interest in Gon and Killua. This may be because he sees less fighting potential in them. He forms a loose alliance with Kurapika later however, against the Genei Ryodan.
  • Illumi: The two are comfortable with each other in the way two men of remarkably high ability would gather in a world of lesser beings. They may even be friends, though it is not known how they met, although they can call upon each other for favors. When Illumi is ready to kill Gon, he thinks that he can apologize to Hisoka later despite Hisoka having said that anyone who kills Gon "will not be let off lightly." However, one card wielded from the shadows stops Illumi in his tracks. Later on, Hisoka hires Illumi to replace him as a doppelgänger at the Genei Ryodan headquarters so he could sneak out challenge Kuroro to a fight.
  • Kuroro Lucifer: The sole reason Hisoka masqueraded as a Genei Ryodan member was for the purpose of defeating Kuroro in a battle. Near the end of the York Shin City arc, Hisoka finally gains the chance to fight Kuroro. However, Kurapika has already stripped Kuroro of his nen ability through his use of the Judgement Chain. Thus, Hisoka loses his desire to fight against Kuroro until he can gain his powers back.
  • Machi: Machi appears to be Hisoka's link to the Genei Ryodan. She oversaw Hisoka's match with Kastro in the Celestial Tower and afterward sewed both of Hisoka's arms back to perfect shape with her nen ability, however she does this solely because Hisoka is paying her for the work. Hisoka regards both Machi and Machi's abilities with keen interest, though Machi considers Hisoka a pest at best and a potential enemy of Kuroro's at worst.
