The Himeji Gardens was a gift from sister city Himeji, Japan in 1982. Located in the south parklands[1], it is one of the few classical Japanese gardens in Adelaide.

The garden was originally designed by council staff; however, following two visits by Japanese landscape designer, Yoshitaka Kumada, in the late 1980's, its layout was improved to adhere to traditional principles.

The garden in split into a sansui (山水), a "mountain and lake garden", and a karesansui (枯山水), a "dry rock garden" intended to evoke mountains surrounded by water.
