Harry von Bülow-Bothkamp was one of two brothers to serve in the Luftwaffe during World War I. Harry was discharged from the service after his brother Conrad von Bülow-Bothkamp was killed on 11 August 1918. His oldest brother Walter von Bülow-Bothkamp, a 28 victories Ace and recipient of Pour le Mérite, was killed in action on 6 January 1918. Having scored 6 victories with Jasta 36, he returned to the family estate at Bothkamp.

After World War I he returned to school (Gymnasium) receiving his Abitur and went to University studying agriculture. Together with Paul Bäumer he founded the Bäumer Aero in Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel. The company went bankrupt in the course of the Great Depression.

During World War II he claimed 18 victories, all scored between September 1939 and September 1940.
