[edit] Athletics

There are many sports available for students to participate in. The Topper Athletic Club (TAC) is a parent/faculty organization that helps support all sports teams. They generally meet once a month. All sporting events are overseen by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). Hillwood has had moderate success in athletics. The football team was State Championship contender in the 1990s and early 2000s before their move from AAAA (4A) to AAAAA (5A), which is Tennessee's highest class. The football team is currently coached by Mose Phillips, Jr., who was a starting quarterback at rival Hillsboro High School, and starting fullback at the University of Tennessee. The wrestling team is known for their dominance in the 1970s under famed coach G.P. West, whom the Brentwood Invitational (G.P. West Bruin Invitational) is named for, as well as its many State Champions and the Hillwood Invitaional. Also the Wrestling team had a great run in the mid 1990's under Al Posnack. His best year was the 1994-1995 campaign with a 13-1 record. The baseball team accumulated Hillwood's first State Championship in any sport when they won the TSSAA AAA State Championship over Maryville High School in 1977. The Freshmen Girls Volleyball team found recent success when they won the Nashville City Championship in 2007. The Basketball team is known for famed player Charles Hathaway who was a McDonald's All-American in 1996 and went on to play four years at the University of Tennessee.
