Hilfspolizei

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hilfspolizei (abbr. Hipo) refers to German auxiliary police units. The term is mostly historical; it has been applied to some units created in 1933 by the early Nazi government (mostly from members of SA and SS) and disbanded the same year due to international protests.[1] [2] [3] [4] The term has also been applied to some police units created during WWII in German occupied Europe[5] (often from local collaborators[6], hence there are references to, among others, "Danish Hilfspolizei"[7], "Ukrainian Hilfspolizei"[8] or "Lithuanian Hilfspolizei"[9]).
