Nu Lambda is a group of Elon University students and alumni who are campus or community leaders. It is speculated that their purpose is to manipulate the workings of the University as well as develop those in the organization into influential leaders, during and after their tenure at the University. The meetings of this organization are kept in the strictest of confidence and many believe that Nu Lambda operates primarily away from the campus. Little, if anything, was known about the organization until the fall of 2007, when a student was forced to leave the University abruptly after copies of documents and members names from the organization were left on a public copier.

Those people that are believed to be members of this organization will often deny their membership and membership of others believed to be a part of Nu Lambda, but will not deny the existence of the organization itself. Membership includes influential members of the Board of Trustees, University administration, state and local government officials, and several business executives.

Although young in origin, Nu Lambda, is considered to have significant influence at Elon, as well as throughout the state of North Carolina. It's members have various connections to both wealth and knowledge, thus making it a desirable society in which to be inducted. Reports have suggested that a societal leak occurred in the early part of May, 2008, as questions arose regarding the validity and purpose of Nu Lambda. While attempts have been made to stymie the existence of Nu Lambda, its leaders have insisted that it will go to great lengths to ensure the confidentiality of the four horsemen. Those who seek what they do not want to know, are encouraged to embrace silence, unless notified by those who speak from behind the closed doors.
