[edit] Jimmy Acorn
Does anyone recall a character named Jimmy Acorn which I believe was a feature in Highlights for Children magazine in the 1950's?
[edit] Distribution in waiting rooms
I have rarely encountered a hospital / dentist waiting room without a sample copy of Highlights. Does anyone know if these copies are free to such offices? --BlueNight 08:54, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
I share the same experience. I used to rent a room from a visiting nurse who used her house as her office address. We used to get free samples of all kinds of magazines. Highlights samples may have been distributed to children's doctors.
These samples are not free, nor are copies of any other magazines that magically appear. Most publishers operate a "reception room" program by which they mail copies of magazines chock-a-block with subscription cards to doctor's offices and the like. Highlights was an early adopter of this type of marketing and due to the audience and content it has been successful. Meredith and Reiman are two other publishers of magazines that have strong programs like this.
[edit] Features
I added an incomplete list tag to the list of features, because I know that a ton of the features are missing (e.g. the Aloysius stories, which I always loved). TenPoundHammer 23:37, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Check and Double Check, What's Wrong [with this picture], Dinosaur Days, Ask Arizona (new feature). Yes, there are a lot of missing features here... There are also the historical features to consider. Did you know that each issue of Highlights used to have a page of sheet music? How the world has changed...
I remember the Headwork feature (brainteasers) and the other picture-finding feature (several details from illustrations throughout the issue would appear in a section at the beginning); crafts instructions, jokes, riddles, and reader contributions have also been regular features of the magazine.
