Highpoint (HM Prison)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Highpoint Prison is a Category C male prison located near Newmarket, Suffolk, England.
The site of the prison opened in 1938 as an RAF base. On its closure in 1970, the RAF base was briefly converted into a transit camp for Ugandan refugees.
In 1975, Highpoint Prison was opened, initially providing cells for male prisoners only.
A major refurbishment scheme took place at the prison during the 1980s and since November 1997 female inmates have also been held there.
One of the first female prisoners at Highpoint was the Moors Murderer Myra Hindley, who arrived in early 1998 and remained there until she entered hospital just before her death in November 2002. [1] Female prisoners are no longer held at the prison as Highpoint North recently closed and was re-opened to house male inmates. It is now known as HMP Edmunds Hill.
