[edit] 6th Form

The most recent OFSTED inspection of Highgate Wood School in 2005 commented on its ‘improving’ 6th Form results. Since then 6th Form students have demonstrated their abilities by improving results further in 2006 and 2007.

Highgate Wood now sends over 80 students each year to university or higher education and in 2008 they expect a number of our students to be offered places at the country's top universities including Cambridge, King College, Manchester, Edinburgh, Sussex and Warwick.

  • Only around 170 people can get into the 6th form.

Highgate Wood School's Arts college redesignation builds upon its success in the performing arts, whilst highlighting its excellent visual arts credentials. The award recognises the high standard of work produced by Highgate Wood students, guided by highly motivated and passionate staff. Ambitious recent drama productions include 'The Crucible' by Arthur Miller and 'Yerma' by Federico Garcia Lorca. The school's Music department has a well-deserved reputation, both for the standard of its concert performances and for the large number of students who benefit from individual instrumental tuition. Exhibitions of GCSE and A-level art demonstrate the talent and creativity of Highgate Wood students. Arts college status is helping the school to extend its activities further into the community, building on an already active programme which includes art classes for local people, music lessons and a well established community choir. Creativity and innovation are also encouraged across the broader curriculum of the school.

Highgate Woods also has huge success within sport in Haringey. This year's year 11 boys football team, were runners up in the Haringey Cup and lost out in the semi final of the Middlesex Cup.

[edit] OFSTED inspections

From the last OFSTED report, students believe 'they are all of equal worth' and can achieve their potential regardless of their starting point at HWS (Highgate Wood School). "Consequently, standards have risen each year since the last inspection and are in line with the national average, with good achievement.Good quality teaching is leading to most students achieving well. However, the challenge for the more able pupils, African, Caribbean, Turkish and those with learning difficulties is not yet consistent. The quality of care, guidance and support is excellent with good provision for personal development; but a small minority of disaffected pupils remain unsettled. Learning is greatly assisted by an effective curriculum. The school has successfully used its performing arts status to extend pupils' personal development and achievements in the arts.Parents support the school and all that it offers but a few are concerned about the truculent behaviour of a minority of pupils. The school has successfully tackled the areas for improvement from the last inspection. It provides good value for money and is very well placed to improve further in all respects." - From the report.
