After the collapse of socialist regime, the DBE updated the high schools education system that most of the study syllabus based in socialism were withdrawn and new version was introduced. 9th Standard is regarded as the year one of the high school or Grade 10 and 10th Standard is the year two of the high school or Grade 11, where matriculation exams are hold. In that time, matriculation exams included the lessons from both the year one and the year two courses. Students who passed the matriculation exams are eligible to enter Universities in their own choices. However, restrictions to access certain institutions and universities existed. Foreign Registration Card holders are not eligible to study at certain universities such as Yangon University of Medicine, Yangon Institute of Technology, etc. Teachers and all staffs in high schools are underpaid, although many teachers are in aspects of love and sympathy to the students, no matter the low salary.

[edit] Syllabus
There was a system that science study students have six major units such as Myanmar, English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Arts study students will achieve Myanmar, English, Mathematics, Geography, History and Economics. As many of high schools' students need to study by hard work to pass the exams, there is a norm that parents put their sons and daughters in private boarding schools to have better training and guidelines. As teenagers life in boarding schools, students are pressed and controlled under the teachers so that it is non-democratic if compared to the western cultures. Boarding schools accepts more than 500 students per year and train students towards matriculation examination as early as three years prior to that. At today's context, boarding schools are quite competitive with each other so that it is more negotiating black economy in the market economy of Burma.
[edit] Examinations
All schools from the whole Myanmar, including government schools and comprehensive schools and private boarding schools have to take matriculation exams hold only by the Myanmar Board of Examinations. Students from government high schools and comprehensive schools can registered for the examinations internally by the guidelines of school teachers, although students from private boarding schools have to register for the exams externally themselves.
[edit] Criticism
In the meantime, comprehensive schools are developed as minority rich family can afford some fund to raised up the school's quality. Schools in Rangoon such as TTC Yangon and, Dagon-1 are highest in price, suppose one can afford in millions of Kyats in donor will be able to enrol to these schools. Some families afford their children into boarding schools as high as 5 millions kyats a year for an overall care of a student. Therefore, uneven system and unfairness come out between the poorer(sub-urban districts) and the cities. Critics say that if the education system is fair, and all students are treated equally, there will be no struggle and waste in sending off the teenagers into the boarding schools. Also, there is a dispute between the high school teachers and the government, as law outlined tat teachers are not allowed to teach or run private tuition schools in recent year.
