High Point Central High School is a public high school located in High Point, North Carolina. The school has a population of approximately 1,400 students in 9th–12th grades. The school's offerings include Advanced Placement classes and the International Baccalaureate degree program.
Founded in 1897 as "High Point High School," the current building was erected in 1926. The building was "state of the art" for the time, and included central air conditioning. Ice blocks were carried to the top of the towers, and placed in front of a fan that blew across the ice blocks and into the ventilation system. Cold water from the melted ice was then routed to the drinking fountains. The school went for decades with no air conditioning at all (in the sweltering North Carolina heat) due to the impracticality of this system.
In 1970, with the creation of a second high school in High Point (T. Wingate Andrews), High Point High School was renamed "High Point Central High School," and is so named today.[1]
