[edit] Who is HiEv?
I'm a computer programmer who was active on Usenet and a moderator of the Skepticality forums, but is currently on a break from them. My somewhat out of date homepage can be found here:
http://www.alt-hacker.org/~HiEv/
"HiEv" is actually short for High Evolutionary, my old nick from my BBS days, and is pronounced "high-'ev".
I've been doing minor edits, corrections, and updates in Wikipedia anonymously for a while now, so I figured it was about time to get a user account.
If I do anything wrong, please let me know what I did and what I should have done instead. I enjoy constructive criticism. :-)
[edit] Current concerns
I'm currently concerned about editors attempting to bypass Wikipedia's verifiability, reliable sources, and/or original research guidelines by adding categories to articles without any verification in the article. Also, many other editors simply overlook the additions of categories without thinking about those guidelines. I find this of special concern because of some editors who have added categories like "Category:Jewish atheists" to biographical articles that neither show that the person is Jewish nor an atheist (an example). A couple of times I've seen various "Jew" or "atheist" categories added to articles about Communist spies from around the WWII era, but without any justification, which makes me worry that some such edits are an attempt at a subtle antisemitic and/or anti-atheist smear campaign. Supporting that suspicion are some categories of Jews, such as "Jewish billionaires" (created by a banned user), apparently made for the purpose of supporting a stereotype, many of which have been deleted. In another example, the Lisa Crystal Carver article used to have Category:Courtesans and prostitutes in it, but there wasn't anything in the article suggesting she was a courtesan or a prostitute (see where I removed it here). And that was in a biography of a living person! As such I hope that other Wikipedia editors will pay closer attention to the categories that are included in articles. As a reminder, Wikipedia:Categorization says:
7. Categories appear without annotations, so be careful of NPOV when creating or filling categories. Categories that are not self-evident, or are shown through reliable sources to be controversial, should not be included on the article; a list might be a better option.
8. An article should normally possess all the referenced information necessary to demonstrate that it belongs in each of its categories. Avoid including categories in an article if the article itself doesn't adequately show it belongs there. For example, avoid placing a category for a profession or award unless the article provides some verification that the placement is accurate.
