Kathleen C. "Kathy" Kim

"... worked with Coach Laurie Newman at Hickory High School in 1989 to lead the Hickory High boy's tennis team to the state championship. ... She was named NC Teacher of the Year in 1986, and the Southern Teacher of the Year in 1988, by the NC Tennis Association. In 2002, both the United States Tennis Association and the North Carolina Tennis Association honored her as the National Teacher of the Year. The City of Hickory honored her with the Community Relations Council award in 1992 and she won the Hickory Rotary Club's first-ever Dwight Bartlett Award in 1992." [[1]]

B. E. "Gene" Miller

"He then began teaching at Hickory High School, where he coached the boy's basketball teams to seven conference championships between 1951 and 1959." [[2]]

Troy L. Washam

"His Hickory High baseball teams won nine conference championships and he was named conference Coach of the Year on several occasions... He was inducted into the North Carolina American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 1968 and in 1983 was elected to the Lenoir-Rhyne Sports Hall of Fame." [[3]]

LARRY A. WITTENBERG

"...his greatest successes came after he returned home to become a coach and teacher at Hickory High School ... Wittenberg's football teams posted a collective record of 41-36 during his years as head coach, and won three conference titles. He was named Northwestern 4A Conference Coach of the Year on three occasions. As track coach for Hickory High from 1975 through 1992, he led teams to 129 first place finishes, 20 conference championships (never finishing lower than third in the conference meet), and three sectional titles. He was named conference Coach of the Year in track nine times. His teams won the prestigious Porter Relays in Lenoir over eight consecutive years." [[4]]

Frank R. Barger, Sr.

"...earned recognition as head football coach at Hickory High School for 32 years between 1953 and 1984 amassing 25 winning seasons. Under Barger, the Red Tornadoes rose to prominence capturing 11 conference titles and winning 230 games ... Barger also coached four other sports at Hickory High compiling over 625 victories in five (5) different sports while earning 29 conference titles." [[5]]
