Hickory High School (Hickory, Virginia) is a high school in Chesapeake, Virginia. There are approximately 2,600 students. The school's mascot is a hawk and the school colors are teal, grey, white, and black.
Due to the overwhelming amount of students, a new school, Grassfield High School, has been built nearby.
The school's band program is one of the highest bands in the state. It has been selected a Virginia State Honor's Band for several years running(Honors Band- The school's marching and top concert band must receive grade 1 a.k.a superior in state festivals). The band program is under the direction of conductors David Enloe and Matt Phillips. The marching band has won top awards at competitions held at venues such as Giants Stadium in New Jersey and M&T Bank Stadium in Maryland.
On June 9th of 2006, an outbreak of whooping cough in the school made it to local news. Each student was given a letter to inform his or her parents. The infected student came into contact with many of his/her peers within the period of being infected, so these students were given an additional letter to give to their parents. [1]
The 2007-2008 Scholastic Bowl Team recently won the titles of Southeastern District Champions and Southeastern District Season Champions, and finished the season with a 21-3 record, coming in third place in the 2008 state championship. The team is coached by Mrs. Ford and Mr. Morgan.
The school has a zero tolerance policy on substance abuse, such as the possession of marijuana or alcohol.
