Hexham railway station serves the town of Hexham in Northumberland, England. It is located on the Tyne Valley Line which runs from Newcastle upon Tyne to Carlisle, and is managed by Northern Rail who provide all passenger train services.
When one enters the station, one steps immediately onto platform two. Platform one is the far platform, over the footbridge.
The station features two waiting rooms, one on each platform. Platform two's waiting room has a fireplace made of black marble, which includes many fossilised orthoceras cephalopods, dated to approximately 400 million years old[citation needed]. Platform two also has a ticket machine, and a brand new shop, accessed from the platform, that sells rail paraphernalia. Newly installed ticker-screens show the estimated arrival times of the next few trains.
The station has toilets located on platform two, and a bar/restaurant called The Green Room. Access to The Green Room is from outside the station. The station forms part of Hexham Transport Interchange. There is also an internet phone box, a bus stop, and a small taxi rank outside which is serviced by several local taxi companies, the largest of these being Advanced Taxis. A pay-and-display car park is available. There is a staffed ticket office on platform two (not 24 hours). The lovely floral displays have won several awards from the Britain in Bloom scheme.[citation needed]
Dating from around 1838, Hexham station is one of the oldest purpose-built railway stations in the world.[citation needed]
