Hexbug is a six-legged toy robot, i.e. a true robot intended just for amusement. Hexbug has a few simple behaviors. Once switched on, hexbug will move forward with a classic alternating tripod gait. If an obstruction touches either of the antennae, or if it detects a loud sound it will back up to the left and then continue forward. Hexbug was created by Innovation First, Inc. and is distributed by Bandai in Japan, IBL Parts in the UK and Radio Shack in the United States. Hexbugs may also be purchased directly from the Vex Robotics website. Hexbug comes in five different colors: orange, green, blue, yellow, pink. additional colors, piano black, and silver are available in Japan. They are named ALPHA, BRAVO, CHARLIE, DELTA, ECHO respectively according to the NATO phonetic alphabet. Each model sports a differently shaped shell.
The Hexbug takes two button cell batteries. The manufacturer recommends that the user not mix old and new batteries. The packaging says: "Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc) or rechargeable (nickel-cadmium) batteries"
