Heworth station is a suburban interchange between bus, Northern Rail and Tyne and Wear Metro services. The station opened to National Rail trains in November 1979, and to Metro trains in November 1981. It was the terminus of the Metro's Yellow line services (and the now defunct Red line services) until Pelaw opened in 1985.

Heworth is 4 km (2¾ miles) south east of Newcastle Central with an hourly service Monday to Saturdays westbound to Newcastle (and beyond) and eastbound to Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
Sundays there is an hourly service in each direction (two-hourly to Middlesbrough).
