Heuvelton, New York

Heuvelton is a small rural village located in St. Lawrence County in the state of New York in the United States of America. It is situated about six miles southeast of the city of Ogdensburg, and as of the 2000 census, had a total population of 804.

The Village of Heuvelton is situated about six miles southeast of the city of Ogdensburg and is in the Town of Oswegatchie on Route 812.

The name of the local native tribe was "Oswegatchie." The village was previously called "Fordsburgh" and "East Branch," but the current name was assumed in 1832.

The Oswegatchie River flows through the village.

Heuvelton is located at 44°37′6″N, 75°24′22″W (44.618334, -75.406064)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²), of which, 0.8 square miles (2.0 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (10.34%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 804 people, 313 households, and 213 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,042.5 people per square mile (403.2/km²). There were 332 housing units at an average density of 430.5/sq mi (166.5/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.39% White, 0.62% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.12% Asian, and 1.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.50% of the population.

There were 313 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $34,375, and the median income for a family was $38,056. Males had a median income of $30,114 versus $20,982 for females. The per capita income for the village was $16,276. About 11.3% of families and 13.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.6% of those under age 18 and 10.1% of those age 65 or over.
