[edit] Router

Before adding this word to this list, I acknowledged that the popular pronunciation of 'router' (as in data router) is ˈraʊtər. Many dictionaries I have researched associate both pronunciations of router (ˈraʊtər and ˈrutər) with the description of an object that could be a device that routes data. However ˈrutər was always written before ˈraʊtər, (when describing the above mentioned object) seemingly signifying that it is the preferred pronunciation.

The word router can come from two differently spelled root words. They are route and rout. The dictionaries 'preferred' pronunciation of each word is (as I have written in Heteronym table), raʊt for rout and rut for route. One thing I can make clear, a data router routes data, it does not rout data. So at the end of the day, it comes down to how you pronounce route.

Because they are two distinct words (route and rout), there should be an effort made to linguistically differentiate between them (this should also apply to the words created by these root words). The English speaking world will be better off with less heterographic words (in my opinion of 'course'(pardon the pun)).
