[edit] Halosarcia
So should we go with a page move? --Melburnian (talk) 05:56, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- I think, botanically speaking, it's a no-win situation because the genus is staying put (with nothing in it) and the species are "moving".Given that the article content is predominantly about the species, I'd say the move would be the way to go, and the history would be less hidden away. Of course, as you mention, if the reclassification was reverted, things could turn pear-shaped :| --Melburnian (talk) 06:44, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] world
Is that domination or are there other adjectives more appropriate? SatuSuro 10:32, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- Domination is a noun. :-D What other terms did you have in mind? Hesperian 10:41, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
I thought ball was in your court - your explanation as to your effective achievement or attainment of world domination, or did i miss something? OK now the map on your user page - definitely a long beer/coffee over the issue of the portuguese et al is obviously due SatuSuro 13:39, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Page design theft
I'm also using your Image:Houman Abrolhos bay.jpg as my desktop background. So, thanks for both that and the userpage. Euryalus (talk) 23:38, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- It's nice, isn't it. I only uploaded it but, and with a misspelled name :-(. Ernie Dingo took the picture. Hesperian 00:05, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- Heh, only just noticed I actually copied the picture itself to this page. Sorry about that. Still, its always nice to look at. Euryalus (talk) 00:42, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Page design ref'd
I think I resolved the problem that you tagged, but the metaphysics of the reference probably needs something by Italo Calvino to be reliable. I did think about creating Template:Cite Hesperian. cygnis insignis 04:46, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Richie Benaud's Greatest XI
Hi Hesperian, why did you remove the prod deletion template from this article? --Nick Dowling (talk) 10:04, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- Because I object to its deletion, per the template. I don't really give a toss about the DVD, but the list upon which the DVD is based was greatly anticipated, widely reported, and dissected ad nauseum by cricket tragics . It is notable. Hesperian 11:20, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- OK, fair enough. --Nick Dowling (talk) 07:42, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Pelsaert
Hi Hesperian. I didn't mean to be brutal by simply deleting the image, but I'm afraid there's no chance it's of the Pelsaert who was involved in the Batavia mutiny. That Pelsaert died at the age of 35. The guy in the picture, to me, has got to be late 40s+. That's a subjective judgement, but objectively I can say that Pelsaert never wrote a book called "Batavia", and was far from rich enough to own the sort of house shown in the picture. There's also no record he ever lived in Rijswijk. I have to think the gallery has made a misattribution, or been misinformed by whoever they bought the picture from. [edit] Your block of NYScholar
Hello. I am responding to an unblock request by NYScholar (talk · contribs). As far as I can determine, you blocked this user for archiving or deleting content on his talk page. I am having a hard time understanding this block. WP:U states that "Policy does not prohibit users from removing comments from their own talk pages, though archiving is preferred." Furthermore, blocks are supposed to be preventative, but blocking NYScholar does not prevent him from editing his talk page. Accordingly, I recommend unblocking NYScholar, or, failing that, I'd appreciate it if you would comment on his unblock request. Thanks, Sandstein (talk) 07:46, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- As you seem to be offline, I have unblocked the user for the reasons given on his talk page. Sandstein (talk) 09:22, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
I'm just rather astounded that anyone would overturn a disruption block on that account. The false accusations against multiple administrators, bogus claims and downright lies, the cries of "admin abuse", and otherwise general disruption is quite fantastic. I don't think I've ever come across someone so full to the brim with lies and false accusations and appalling accusations of bad faith in others, who manages to immediately get unblocked without so much as a discussion! Outstanding! Sarah 20:30, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
- I have replied to Hesperian on my talk page. To Sarah, I would like to add that "false accusations against multiple administrators, bogus claims and downright lies" were not the stated reason for NYScholar's block, and accordingly I have not been able to examine such allegations – which, indeed, are not substantiated here either – upon considering NYScholar's unblock request. Sandstein (talk) 21:42, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Hi: here is another example of NYScholar's irrational use of archiving. [1] i have had many run-in's with her and have simply left discussions out of pure frustration. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.131.53.9 (talk) 00:18, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. Beggars belief. A discussion on this issue was held at WP:ANI#NYScholar block overturned and has pretty much petered out now. I have no wish to revive it at this point, but you may, if you wish. Hesperian 00:25, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
The interesting thing about that discussion is it was supposed to be about the unblocking action (which really irks me) rather than about NYS specifically. My apologies if I and others contributed to it going off course. —Moondyne 00:39, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- I requested feedback on both the block and the unblock. I suppose the degree to which NYS was at fault cuts to the heart of both, so it's no surprise the discussion ended up there. Orderinchaos did try to focus the discussion on the unblocking process, but with little success. Not that it matters, as Sandstein acknowledged some fault there and apologised, so that's that.
- In the end, Sandstein and I were both acting in good faith, and the community is obviously divided on the issue, so I can only conclude that occasional disagreements like this are inevitable. Or, as a bumper sticker once told me, "shit happens". Hesperian 00:52, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] dyk
I say yes - the ambiguity of the explanations as to what it really was is a good one for dyk (imho) SatuSuro 13:59, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Any article with the word "verisimilitude" in it has got to be dyk-worthy (I admit that I had to look it up). But seriously, I really like it. How about:
- ... that the Eneabba Stone Arrangement is an Aboriginal stone arrangement once thought to have been associated with survivors of the Vergulde Draeck, a Dutch galleon wrecked on the west coast of Australia in 1656?

Hi Hesperian. I am completely confused about the change to this page - regarding a copyright violation apparently. Can you briefly enlighten me?--Nickm57 (talk) 23:12, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks for the compliment. Yes its been a hobby of mine for the last 30 years. I do indeed have a copy of Richardson 2006. Its still available - saw it at Melb Uni bookroom in Jan at full price also at a second hand bookshop last year - almost full price! Lavishly illustrated, easy to read, a very good review of the whole debate.--Nickm57 (talk) 01:38, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Houtman Abrolhos
Hi Hesperian. Richardson's 2006 book only contains brief reference to Houtman Abrolhos(p.43 in the context of AF Calvert's 1893 inscriptions on copies of the Dieppe maps) so its just as well you didnt fork out $20+ for it. However, I do recall reading something by Richardson in the Journal of the Australian Map Circle in the mid 1980s on this, so I'll dig it out. --Nickm57 (talk) 02:47, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

- "The two Portuguese place names off our shores, Pedra Branca (White Rock), an islet off the southern tip of Tasmania and the Abrolhos Islands off Geraldton in Western Australia, can both be accounted for by explanations other than their having been named by Portuguese navigators. Readers of Tasman’s journal have long known that he says, in effect, that he gave Pedra Branca that name because it reminded him of a similar island of the same name off the coast of China near Macau. The Abrolhos are associated with the name of the Dutch navigator Frederick Houtman, almost certainly because he called them that when nearly shipwrecked there in 1619. Many Portuguese people are aware that Abrolhos is a contraction of the words Abre (Open) and Olhos (eyes). It was the cry that was yelled by or at the lookout in the crow’s-nest when navigational hazards were suspected. But it was also a now obsolete maritime term for a reef or shoal. Abrolhos appear on Portuguese 16th and 17th century maps from the western hemisphere to Asia and the most famous ones were those still known as the Arquipélago dos Abrolhos off the coast of the Brazilian state of Bahai. They lay perilously close to the regular route from Europe to Asia via the Cape of Good Hope. Despite Portugal’s policy of secrecy in the 16th century, Dutchmen and sailors from other countries did sail on Portuguese ships and Portuguese maritime terminology was used by foreigners. The chart of part of the Gulf of Carpentaria, made by the first Dutch ship know to have reached Australia, the Duyfken, in 1606, used the Portuguese word cabo (cape) amongst otherwise exclusively Dutch words. The same thing occurred with abrolhos and other words which figured on charts stolen, bought or copied from the Portuguese."

[edit] Kevin Hart
He/she really doesn't like him, eh? Thanks to you and Gillyweed for sharing the watching.Sterry2607 (talk) 06:11, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Why edit the statement that his awards are Australian rather than International? It's true: the three awards cited in the entry are all regional Australian awards; not one has international stature. No citation is needed for this; just follow the links and read the Wikipedia entries for those three awards. They are obviously regional Australian awards. I'd undo your revert, but you'd just undo my undo. If you'd rather glorify mediocrity, go right ahead. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.62.170.157 (talk) 14:30, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

- Hi Hesperian. Interesting comment from the IP address editor. In one sense s/re has a point but do you think that for every person who wins awards from just one country we need to say that? I think this could get a little silly. Looking at it logically (though I suppose Wiki isn't wonderfully logical): Do we need to go back an check every article for every person who has won awards to clarify whether they are national of multi/inter-national awards)? In fact, Hart, seems to have quite an international standing - he's been employed by at least 2 American universities and Harold Bloom (recognised US literary critic) has been quoted as saying “Kevin Hart is one of the major living poets of the English language". To be honest, I have no particular interest in Kevin Hart - just came across him in my Aus Lit rounds - but as a matter of principle it seems to me that there are some things going on here that may not be totally objective? (Not trying to give you bother - I'd understand perfectly if you ignored my comment here!)Sterry2607 (talk) 03:44, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Need some admin help
User:AeronM created the article Bitless bridle (be sure to check out the talk page) evidently to increase interest in the Aeron Riding Halter, which she invented and sells. From the beginning, her edits have been heavily POV, and she has routinely deleted NPOV text added by several other editors. I got so frustrated with her insistence that her edits were fact, and all other edits were opinions, that I took a wikibreak. One of the other editors has asked whether I know any admins who could help us out. Could you give us a hand?--Curtis Clark (talk) 14:41, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

- No idea if it discusses Australia. I would assume not, but that was partly why I was interested in reading a translation. Animals (M) in the map could be emus. [edit] Fast Editing
Hi! May I ask how you managed to create 41 articles in less than a minute as shown here? Sorry if I am accusing you unnecessarily, but normally it is not possible to edit that fast under normal means. Captain panda 00:37, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- By creating them all when I had some spare time but no access to Wikipedia, then loading them each into separate firefox tabs, so that I could copy-paste an edit summary, then hammering the save button repeatedly. You are welcome to go through my 3 year, 34000 edit history looking for evidence of unauthorised botting if you wish ;-) Hesperian 00:42, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Riding halter
Can you go back and weigh in on the AfD discussion on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Riding Halter and bring some neutral friends? It's just the four of us fighting again over there the way we are at bitless bridle and elsewhere. No consensus can be reached amongst us for something as major as deletion. Third parties will have to decide it, I think. Montanabw(talk) 02:26, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

- Let me put it this way: Short of my being bold, making sure that all the non-POV, non-COI information in the article is also in bitless bridle, deleting the contents, and putting in a redirect to bitless bridle, how would you suggest we get closure on this?--Curtis Clark (talk) 03:09, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

- If I recall correctly, there is a minimum number of days that a discussion should be left — five? — and after that it is just a matter of someone getting around to it. Theoretically, anyone who is familiar with the procedure and uninvolved in the dispute can make the closure, but in practice most AfD closures are done by administrators. The options are: close as consensus to delete, close as consensus to keep, close as no consensus, or restart discussion. Only about half of the deletion discussions opened on February 21 have been closed at this stage, so I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. Hesperian 22:39, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

- For reasons long forgotten, Australian sportspeople means sportspeople of Australian nationality, whereas sportspeople from Australia means sportspeople who notably reside or resided in Australia. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (categories)#Residence and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (categories)#Occupation. How this fits in with that, I have no idea. [edit] WBFAN
Hi - Regarding this edit, the bot recreates the list every time I run it from the by-year summary lists, e.g. Wikipedia:Featured articles nominated in 2007, which are created from information mined from the FA logs, e.g. Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Featured log/December 2007. This is all publicly available information (anything anyone does is public, edits concerning FAs perhaps more public than most). You can remove yourself from WBFAN by editing the by-year summary lists (these are kept current with respect to main page appearance date and current FA/FFA status of articles but the nominator[s] are not updated after they're added except manually), but I'm curious why you might want to opt out. -- Rick Block (talk) 03:58, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- G'day Rick,
- I reckon that list gives people the wrong impression. It counts FA nominations, which is a purely procedural matter, but the average Joe will think that this equates to FAs written. One of the FAs that I nominated was mostly written by Casliber, and a couple of the FAs that I mostly wrote were nominated by others. Even the ones that are correctly against my name were a collaborative effort and it doesn't seem right to credit them entirely to me.
- Having said all that, I don't see it as a very big deal, and I don't intend to waste my or anyone else's energy by fighting over it.
- Hesperian 04:52, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
The basic premise of WBFAN is that it takes non-trivial effort to nominate an FA and respond to the reviewers at FAC. Clearly, most articles are collaborative efforts. Several editors have edited the by-year summaries to include primary authors where the primary author and nominator are not the same user. I think this is perfectly fine. The point is to encourage folks to make the effort to get articles all the way to FA (actually, the point is to provide an arena to compete in that does more for the encyclopedia than WP:WBE). If you want to opt-out that's fine with me, although it takes more than 0 effort to do this (in particular, your edit will be undone the next time I run the bot). Please feel free to remove yourself from the by-year summaries. Alternatively, please feel free to include other editors you think are more worthy. This is all extremely informal, meant to encourage participation in the FA process. There's more about this at Wikipedia talk:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations if you're interested. -- Rick Block (talk) 05:24, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
