State elections for the Landtag of Hesse were held in Hesse on 27 January 2008. The ruling CDU was virtually tied by the insurgent SPD under Andrea Ypsilanti. It remains unclear what coalition will form to rule the state, but the third parties will play a significant role determining this.[1]

A few weeks prior to the election, incumbent minister-president Roland Koch had started a tough-approach campaign against youth violence, which was regarded as xenophobic by the political left and most of German media.

The election was the first ever contested by the German Piratenpartei, and the second election for any Pirate Party[2].
